In 2019 I had the opportunity to work on the album cover for a very special group of friends.
Goiaba de Casa was formed in Rio Grande - RS, Brazil in 2015 by a group of friends.
They were:
Paola Kirst - Voice
Cleiton Oliveira - Voice and guitar
Vinícius Puccinelli - Voice and guitar
Dionísio Souza - Bass
Bernardo Grohs - Percussion
They grabbed inspiration from the environment, art, poetry, music and everyday life from the south of Brazil and Latin America, creating a very unique sound that is very familiar to everyone who lives here.
The band dissolved around 2018 - 2019, but as a gift to the world, they released an album that encapsulate their compositions and covers from its years of activity.
The project
During that year my work as mostly focused on portraits, and being a friend of the band I thought it would bring a sense of familiarity if I drew portraits of them during performances.
For me, portraits are a very special kind of art. It takes more than a simple copy to capture someone’s likeness. Being able to draw people I know and care is one of the best parts of the trade. In this case, it allowed me to dive a little bit deeper into their creative process and it brought out a beautiful composition of them doing what they enjoyed.
The horizontal strokes used as texture against the yellow background evoke a sense of organicity and shapeshifting nature of the band as they all used to switch instruments and sing together during their concerts, bringing a very dynamic feeling to their shows.
I used simple illustrations in white contrasting with the dark blue texture of the inside cover to achieve a calming effect.
Being from Rio Grande myself, we have a big connection with the sea, and these drawings were made as a reminder of that, tying it up thematically with the songs.
Unfortunately, during the releasing time of the album, the band was no longer in activity so the printed version of this project was never released.
But they did release the digital version of the album with the original cover art! You can check it out at the end of this page.
Thank you Goiaba de Casa for all the good times together.
